چکیده

This paper describes the concept for a cooperatively controlled combination of Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) with a motor-driven exoskeleton for gait rehabilitation in hemiplegic patients. The objective is to combine the therapy advantages of FES with a mechanical bracing system, which provides sufficient stabilization and supports a physiological gait pattern. A multi-layered, switching control architecture based on predictive optimization is designed, which allows the patient to control his movements via an intuitive interface. The benefit of the proposed system is tested and evaluated in real scenarios with patients using a prototype.

Evaluation of a Viscoelastic Ankle-Foot Prosthesis at Slow and Normal Walking Speeds on an Able-Bodied Subject

Objectives: This paper describes further improvement and preliminarily evaluation of a novel viscoelastic ankle-foot prosthesis prototype. The objective was to control the ankle hysteresis at slow and normal walking speeds. Methods: Inspired by the ankle biomechanics, in which the hysteresis differs based on the gait speeds, a manually damping control mechanism imbedded in the prosthesis for...

Effect of an 8-Weeks of Comprehensive Corrective Protocol on Postural control, low Back Pain, Gait Speed and Quality of Life on Unilateral Transtibial Amputees

Aims: Amputation makes a person susceptible to postural deviation and compensatory movements and causes reduced performance, biocompatibility, pain, and dissatisfaction. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of eight weeks of a comprehensive rehabilitation protocol on indicators of postural control, back pain, quality of life, and gait speed in adults with unilateral lower lim...

Motor control abnormalities in Parkinson's disease.

The primary manifestations of Parkinson's disease are abnormalities of movement, including movement slowness, difficulties with gait and balance, and tremor. We know a considerable amount about the abnormalities of neuronal and muscle activity that correlate with these symptoms. Motor symptoms can also be described in terms of motor control, a level of description that explains how movement var...

Three–Dimensional Force Analysis of Gait of a Trans-Femoral Amputee with Prosthesis

Background: Prosthetic devices should provide proper alignment of segments and joints for efficient gait. Rehabilitation specialists should carefully assess the best fit of prosthesis for proper force distribution and comfort. The purpose of this paper was to examine the three-dimensional forces of a permanent prosthesis compared with the temporary prosthesis of an amputee during gait. Case des...

Concepts of motor learning applied to a rehabilitation protocol using biofeedback to improve gait in a chronic stroke patient: an A-B system study with multiple gait analyses.

OBJECTIVE The impact of electromyographic biofeedback (EMG BFB) applied during functional gait activities and employed in accord with theories on motor learning was investigated in a chronic hemiplegic patient. METHODS A single-subject A-B design was used. EMG BFB was applied to the triceps surae during gait. A rehabilitation program with a fading frequency of BFB application and an increasin...
